Steinberg's Finest VST Instruments Available Together

Absolute VST instrument collection now shipping

Steinberg has announced the release of their Absolute VST instrument collection, comprising six state-of-the-art Virtual Studio Technology (VST) instruments that provide thousands of presets and sample content of electronic sounds.

Matthias Quellmann, Steinberg's product marketing manager for VST instruments, told Sonic State, "Absolute is the epitome of what Steinberg offers regarding synthesized sounds. With the entire collection running on your computer, an infinite palette of sounds is at your fingertips. It's going to take a while for users to comprehend the sheer magnitude of it all."

Here's Steinberg's description of the collection...

HALion Sonic combines a high-quality sample library with a powerful sampling and synthesis engine that unfolds infinite possibilities for sound generation. Featuring synthesizer programs and presets for contemporary productions, Hypnotic Dance, Triebwerk and Dark Planet complement HALion Sonic's library and as a completely new feature now also run independently as full blown instruments within VST and AU hosts. Retrologue is a virtual-analog synthesizer while Padshop Pro is Steinberg's latest achievement in bringing granular synthesis to the world of VST.

HALion Sonic is Steinberg's renowned VST workstation with more than 1,300 synth sounds, hybrid and acoustic instruments that spans 12 GB of hard drive. A maximum of 20 articulations per instrument cover a generous scope of playing styles for various instruments, while support for Steinberg's VST Expression technology allows for real-time control of all HALion Sonic articulations.

Hypnotic Dance offers unique content with 300 synthesizer sounds and 100 step modulator presets for heavy bass lines and atmospheric pads dedicated to classic trance and rave productions.

Triebwerk boasts 700 MB of sample content, featuring seven drum kits, additional percussion kits, more than 200 synthesizer sounds, 240 HALion FlexPhrases and over 170 beats and loops for four-to-the-floor club music.

Dark Planet comes with 800 presets with lead, bass, pad and percussion loops and instruments as well as high-quality sample content, spanning more than 2 GB in size and ideal for cinematic scores and musical excursions. Its MorphFilter boasts four classic filter types for blending two filters at a time.

Retrologue houses two oscillators, each with a maximum of eight widely detunable voices, one sub and one noise oscillator, alongside a dozen high-quality filter types as well as 300 presets. Also on board are two LFOs and two ADSR envelopes. With the ten-stage Modulation Matrix, users can assign modulation sources to vary the targets' values, also supporting modulation assignments from Note Expression, Steinberg's groundbreaking method for editing controller data.

Padshop Pro delivers two individual tiers in granular textures that are mixed and processed with a dozen high-quality filters, modulation and delay effects. Each layer consists of one oscillator for generating up to eight grain streams with innovative parameters, two LFOs that offer a choice of six wave shapes and two ADSR envelopes that can be applied to various sound parameters, therefore boasting a flexibility absolutely new to granular synthesis. 250 presets are included with the Zero Gravity expansion pack.

HALion Sonic, Retrologue and Padshop Pro can be accessed within any VST 3, VST 2 and AU compatible host. Hypnotic Dance, Triebwerk and Dark Planet can be accessed through HALion, HALion Sonic and HALion Sonic SE or, alternatively, can be run independently under any VST 3, VST 2 and AU compatible host. This is a novelty as Hypnotic Dance, Triebwerk and Dark Planet are powered by dedicated HALion engines and therefore now are fully fledged instruments. All instruments offer cross-platform compatibility with 32 and 64-bit Windows and Mac OS X systems.

Interview: Martyn Ware Heaven 17

Stage tour and a chat

Last week Heaven 17 were in town for a date on their Luxury Gap tour. This is a new tour format where bands recreate and tour specific albums with a live band. Heaven 17 never did tour that album - this project was very much a studio and video project - this was conceived at around the same time MTV was.

The Luxury Gap was one of those seminal albums of its time, with Glenn Gregory's baritone soul voice, some great session keyboard work, with Martyn Ware's electronic pop genius. Martyn Ware was also a founder member of theHuman League, leaving before they hit the real pop spotlight, but you really should check out Reproduction - its an electronic classic.

Before the show, Martyn was kind enough to spare some time to talk to us about his rig, synthesizers and upcoming studio projects.

Rock n' Roll Auction Of The Year

Icons & Idols 2012 features items from Lady Gaga to The Beatles and over 80 signed guitars

Julien's Auctions, the world's premier entertainment and music auction house has announced its Icons & Idols Rock n' Roll Auction Event to take place at the Julien's Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery on Saturday, December 1st, 2012 and Sunday, December 2nd, 2012. Music enthusiasts, collectors and the curious will have the opportunity to bid on iconic music memorabilia dating back from the1930s to modern day. They say that, from the fascinating world of Lady Gaga to the historic legacy of The Beatles, this auction will be the Rock n' Roll auction of the year to watch. Here's the details in Julien's Auctions' own words:

Although today's generation will quickly remember Lady Gaga performing on stage in her now infamous "meat suit," it was in 1966 that The Beatles were photographed by Roger Whitaker wearing butcher coats with meat and doll parts surrounding them. This became the cover image for the Beatles' Yesterday and Today album though it was not originally intended for the cover of an album. It was immediately deemed unsuitable by DJs around the world and Capitol Records pulled the album. One copy, intended for the trash, was rescued by a Modern Album Company employee and stored away for more than 45 years. This first state stereo copy will be amongst the highlights of the Icons & Idols Music Auction (Est: $6000-8000).

Other highlights of the sale include a John Lennon shirt that he wore on a family vacation to Japan (Est: $15,000-20,000); a 1963 dollar bill signed by all members of the Beatles and legendary DJ Murray The K (Est: $2000-4000); photographs taken by Liverpool Echo columnist George Harrison (no relation to the musician) as The Beatles flew to America for the very first time (Est: $400-600, each); and a very special poster signed at the 2002 Concert for George memorial concert held at the Royal Albert Hall (Est: $1000-2000). Signatures include Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Jeff Lynne, Eric Clapton and other friends of George Harrison. The proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Material World Foundation founded in 1973 by George Harrison.

Rock and Roll and a bit of country fashion will also be highlighted and include James Brown's stage worn white and orange gingham suit (Est: $600-800); Englebert Humperdinck's Las Vegas stage worn suit (Est: $1000-2000); Dolly Parton's 1976 stage worn dress (Est: $10,000-12,000); Liberace's album and stage worn suits (Est: $10,000-12,000 and $5000-7000); Whitney Houston's concert and event ensembles; Meat Loaf's embellished stage suits (Est: $200-400, each); and Porl Thompson's stage and video worn costumes (Est: $2500-5000).

In a a rare and remarkable offering seldom seen on the auction block, Lady Gaga's personal and professional clothing will also be auctioned. This includes four of the Lady's items. Greek designer Eddie Gavriilidis created the "Ecstasy" gown which Gaga wore while visiting a radio station in Omaha, Nebraska. The laser cut snakeskin and nude mesh dress bears a spot of blood where an over-enthusiastic fan scratched Lady Gaga in a throng of other fans (Est: $10,000-12,000). In the short film Manifesto of Little Monsters based on a text written by Lady Gaga, she appears in a variety of costumes including the clear mask (Est: $3000-5000); other head gear including a Frank Fernandez headpiece worn during the Monster Ball tour in 2010 (Est: $4000-6000); and a Keko Hainswheeler face mask worn by the singer in her video for the song "Bad Romance (Est: $2000-4000).

Other highlights will include Madonna's black bouffant dress worn by the mega-star for LIFE Magazine shoot with photographer Bruce Weber. The gown is accompanied by an original Bruce Weber photograph (Est: $40,000-50,000); Bruce Springsteen's personal stage worn clothing and hats (Est: various); jewelry including the Italian horn amulet he is seen wearing on the cover of his 1975 album "Born to Run," and as a tribute to the late Clarence Clemons, "The Big Man," a stage worn white, Homburg style hat (Est: $800-1200); personal items from Carlos Santana and his musician wife Cindy Blackman Santana to benefit their Milagro Foundation (Est: Various); 80 uniquely signed and specially designed guitars including those from Thin Lizzy, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Anthrax, Slayer, Lizzy Borden, Metallica and many others which will benefit Ronnie James Dio's "Stand Up and Shout" charity and in part, the Asian Elephant Art and Conservation Project; U2's the Edge personal stage worn Converse tennis shoes along with a photograph of him on stage wearing the shoes throughout the U2 360 Tour (Est: $800-1200), a Mick Jagger signed Baldwin piano fall-board and bench (Est: $3000-5000), a pair of Les Paul limited edition Thiel speakers (Est: $1000-1500), signed items by Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and a personally owned and played Bryan Adams guitar (Est: $1000-1500); and a pair of guitars signed from Green Day (Est: $800-1200). U2's the Edge and his friends have contributed these items which will benefit Music Rising, an organization co-founded by the Edge in 2005 after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina which has since continued to support the musical heritage and needs of the Gulf South.

The auction will include a spectacular collection of over 450 items and will provide collectors around the world the rare opportunity to take home Rock n' Roll history. All of the property in the auction will be featured in a full color limited edition catalog available for purchase at for $50.00.

Virtual Analog Synth For Reason

Synapse Audio releases Antidote, a new Rack Extension

Synapse Audio has released Antidote, a new Rack Extension for Propellerhead Reason. Here's how they describe it in their own words:

Antidote is an exclusive virtual-analog synthesizer, which combines highest audio quality, flexibility and a fast work flow in an easy-to-use plug in. Antidote has been specifically developed to complement Reason, and to integrate well into its environment. It can be used both as an instrument, and as a powerful multi-effect unit.

Antidote comes with two stereo oscillator banks, each emitting a stack of high quality oscillator waveforms. The oscillators pass through the filter stage, which employ the latest zero-delay feedback designs. Envelopes and LFOs further shape the sound, and the powerful modulation matrix, which can modulate almost any sound parameter, adds the necessary depth to realize complex sounds.

The output of the synthesis stage finally passes through a big effect chain with Distortion, EQ, Phaser, Chorus, Delay, Reverb, Compressor and a unique Bass enhancement effect, which models the bass frequency response of some vintage analog gear.

Antidote ships with 300 Presets and 10 Combinator patches, covering a wide range of music genres.

Pricing and Availability:
Antidote is available at an introductory price of €79 until December 31st, 2012 (the regular price will be €119).
