WNAMM13: Multi-Dimensional Echo Stompbox

Boss announces the TE-2 Tera Echo

Boss says that, powered by Multi-Dimensional Processing technology (MDP), the TE-2 Tera Echo produces a dynamic new stereo ambience effect that goes far beyond traditional delay and reverb. Watch the video and read the company's description of it below...

For an exclusive in-depth look
  • Next-generation BOSS compact pedal with innovative Multi-Dimensional Processing, realized with proprietary technology and custom DSP
  • Rich, spacious echo and ambience effects
  • Dramatically enhances the direct tone, but never overwhelms it
  • Freeze function holds the ambient sound for lead backing and sound effects
  • Ultra-responsive to volume changes and playing dynamics
  • Wide range of sound adjustment with simple controls
  • Mono/stereo input and output

Multi-Dimensional Processing for Superior Tone
Roland's innovative Multi-Dimensional Processing (MDP) analyzes audio signals in many dimensions and applies ideal effects to each. By giving different dynamic changes relative to the input signal in real-time, MDP can create bold, all-new sounds with a previously unattainable range of expression.

TE-2: Inspirational Echo
Thanks to MDP, the TE-2 delivers an amazing new ambience effect that satisfies and inspires. Complex internal processing produces an incredibly deep and spacious sound, dramatically enhancing the straight guitar tone without overwhelming it. Through the TE-2's simple, familiar stompbox controls and incredible sensitivity to your playing dynamics, an extremely wide range of sounds can be achieved. And with the expressive Freeze function, you can hold the current effect sound to create rich soundscapes for lead playing and sonic exploration.

The 100th BOSS Compact Series Model!
The TE-2 Tera Echo represents a milestone as the 100th model in the long history of the BOSS compact series. Starting with the release of the OD-1 Overdrive in 1977, BOSS' legendary stompboxes have been integral tools of artistic expression for millions of players around the world. Fueled by a spirit of dedication and innovation that began nearly four decades ago, the TE-2 carries on the BOSS legacy of bringing inspiring, leading-edge technologies to musicians everywhere.

The 16 audio inputs, 12 mic preamps, and flexible monitor mixing allow you to track most bands without adding any additional hardware, or you can simultaneously connect multiple synthesizers and other devices in large-scale composing setups. For really big projects, you can seamlessly expand your I/O to 32 inputs and 24 mic preamps simply by adding a second STUDIO-CAPTURE.

12 premium mic preamps
STUDIO-CAPTURE has 12 digitally-controlled mic preamps (called VS PREAMPS) made with premium-grade components for exceptional low-noise performance, high headroom, and transparent sound quality. 12 XLR/TRS combo inputs are provided for the preamps, with four inputs on the front panel for quick and easy access. Each channel also has independent phantom power, a low-cut filter, phase invert, and digital compression, all accessible via the included software control panel.

Generous and flexible I/O
STUDIO-CAPTURE has a total of 16 input channels and 10 output channels. Each of the 12 XLR mic inputs can alternately be used as a balanced/unbalanced ¼-inch line input.
Front

  • Two headphone jacks each with own control knob
  • 4 XLR mic inputs with premium VS PREAMPS, also switchable to Hi-Z operation for connecting guitars and basses

Rear

  • Eight XLR mic / combo jack inputs with premium VS-PREAMPS
  • Four TRS jack inputs
  • Co-axial digital in and out (TRS input 13/14 can be assigned to digital in)
  • Eight analogue TRS jack outputs, with the main stereo outputs mirrored on XLR jacks
  • Two additional outputs (9/10) also available via co-axial digital jack
  • MIDI I/O, with Roland's proprietary FPT processing for superior high-speed performance

High-performance VS STREAMING driver technology
STUDIO-CAPTURE supports high-resolution, 24-bit recording at rates up to 192 kHz, with incredible stability and industry-leading low-latency USB performance using Roland's proprietary VS STREAMING technology. All current Mac and PC DAW platforms are supported through ASIO 2.0/WDM (Windows) and Core Audio (Mac) drivers. The VS STREAMING driver also lets you expand your I/O by using two STUDIO-CAPTUREs on the same USB bus, without compromising stability or audio quality.

AUTO-SENS: perfect levels at the touch of a button
The AUTO-SENS feature lets you quickly and easily set perfect input levels every time. Just press the AUTO-SENS button, play your connected instruments, and STUDIO-CAPTURE automatically sets the ideal recording level for each input in seconds. Useful for pros and beginners alike, AUTO-SENS is a great time saver, offering quick, fail-safe audio capture when recording a fully mic'd drum kit or an entire band.

Comprehensive monitoring and metering
Bright, responsive LED meters let you instantly check your input, output and monitor levels, while dedicated input channel buttons make it quick and easy to get around. The MONITOR OUT section features a dedicated LEVEL knob for control room volume, plus a DIRECT MONITOR knob for listening to selected input signals. Two head phone jacks--each with their own level knob--allow a musician and engineer to monitor at the same time without additional hardware.

Flexible monitor mixing with effects
STUDIO-CAPTURE also offers four independent Direct Mixers for zero-latency monitoring, operated via the software control panel. Powered by STUDIO-CAPTURE's internal DSP, each mix can be routed to any of the outputs, perfect for sending custom monitor mixes to headphones, speakers, or recording devices. Mix configurations can be saved for later use, providing quick setups for many different applications. A high-quality reverb processor is available for monitoring, allowing singers and instrumentalists to record dry tracks while listening to great-sounding ambience effects.

WNAMM13: Roland Reveals New Performance Keyboard

V-Combo VR-09 features piano, organ, and synth engines

Roland tells us that their new V-Combo VR-09 keyboard is an affordable, easy-to-transport rig (weighing just 5 kg) for performing keyboard players, with dedicated piano, organ, and synth engines containing essential tones for live use. They say that the three sound engines are organised in three intuitive blocks on the front panel--giving fast access to the sounds you need and especially useful on a dark stage. The VR-09 is all about controlling your sound too, with nine sliders for tone shaping and a large array of knobs and buttons for tweaking the seven simultaneous effects and various parameters. Other great additions include an onboard looper and a drum section packed with rhythms for practice and jamming.

A Roland spokesperson told Sonic State, "If you're a gigging keyboard player, you'll be looking for at least three things from your next keyboard. First, you'll need a diverse range of convincing sounds to help you get the gigs. Secondly, you'll want to be able to edit sounds quickly when on stage, should you need to. Thirdly, you'd like to tuck the keyboard under your arm after the gig and drive home."

Features

  • Inspiring piano, organ and synth sounds for live use with 61-note keyboard
  • Lightweight (just 5 kg) and mobile; battery or AC power
  • Pro-quality acoustic and electric pianos, including grand piano with 88-note stereo multi-sampling
  • SuperNATURAL-powered Virtual Tone Wheel organ with nine harmonic bars, plus transistor-type '60s organ tone
  • Wide range of synth tones, from vintage classics to modern essentials
  • Seven simultaneous effects with dedicated real-time controls
  • Looper and built-in rhythm patterns; WAV/MP3/SMF song playback via optional USB memory
  • Free VR-09 Editor app available for iPad

Here's the details in Roland's own words:

Intuitive operation for expressive stage performance
The V-Combo VR-09 was designed with the needs of live players in mind. An intuitive front-panel layout and clear LCD screen lets you quickly select Roland's flagship piano, organ, and synth sounds along with plenty of real-time controls for expressive tone manipulation. The seven simultaneous effects - rotary, delay, reverb, tone, overdrive, compressor, and a customisable MFX section – have dedicated knobs that tweak multiple parameters with a single twist for powerful sound shaping with minimal effort. The smart interface makes it simple to set up splits and layers on the fly, and to save all your keyboard settings in the user memory for instant recall on stage.

Pro acoustic and electric pianos for live performance
Piano is a cornerstone sound for live playing, and the V-Combo VR-09 is filled with a wide selection covering all musical styles. The gorgeous acoustic grand piano features 88-note stereo multi-sampling, delivering pro-level piano sound that rivals Roland's dedicated stage pianos. Many popular vintage E. Piano sounds are onboard as well, along with complimentary effects such as vintage phaser and tremolo. The compressor--accessible via a dedicated, easy-to-reach knob--transparently boosts the level of the piano sounds, ensuring that your playing always cuts through when performing in loud bands.

World-class organs with a keyboard (and drawbars) to match
Roland's SuperNATURAL technology powers the V-Combo VR-09's classic tonewheel organs, while nine harmonic bars provide authentic real-time performance control. A newly developed transistor-type organ is also included, offering the unique sound of combo instruments from the 1960s. The 61-note keyboard has an extremely fast response, perfect for essential organ techniques such as trill, sputter, glissando, and percussive hits. Rotary speaker and amp simulators reproduce the characteristics of vintage organ speaker cabinets and overdriven tube circuits with astounding realism, while a new "Twin Rotary" option delivers a deep, aggressive effect never before heard.

Vintage and Modern Synth Tones
The V-Combo VR-09 is packed with ready-to-play synthesizer sounds, from vintage analogue classics like JUNO strings and '80s synth brass to textured, modern-era digital tones and beyond. Front-panel controllers allow you to tweak the synth tones intuitively in real time, including convenient ADSR and cutoff/resonance adjustment with the harmonic bars from the ORGAN block. Effects like "Bit Crash" let you get your hands dirty by creating authentic, relevant sounds for current dance music genres, including Dubstep.

Free VR-09 iPad Editor for editing sounds
The free VR-09 Editor app for iPad gives you powerful, intuitive control of the organ and synth sound engines via your iPad's full-colour touchscreen interface. Quickly edit organ sounds and customise vintage tonewheel characteristics such as leakage, click noise, and rotary speed, and easily access synth sounds to build custom tones and layers. After tweaking sounds at home, you can take your iPad to the gig and use the app for extra real-time control on stage. Convenient, cable-free communication between the V-Combo VR-09 and iPad is simple to set up with Roland Wireless Connect. You can also link up with a USB cable via Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit.
