WNAMM13: Sing, Play And Practice With iOS Devices

Roland introduces the CUBE Lite MONITOR

Roland tells us that, featuring mic and instrument inputs, iOS interfacing, and a quality 2.1 Channel audio system, the CUBE Lite MONITOR is perfect for enjoying music at home with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Connect your iOS device to the i-CUBE LINK jack, and then launch the free CUBE JAM app to play, record, and take advantage of practice tools like speed/pitch adjustment, Center Cancel for minus-one tracks, and more. Roland says that stereo speakers and an integrated subwoofer provide rich sound that fills the room, while onboard effects offer pleasing ambience for singing and playing instruments. Here's more details directly from Roland...

  • Tabletop monitor amplifier with a stylish look for home living spaces
  • Great-sounding 2.1 Channel audio system, with stereo speakers and integrated subwoofer
  • Stereo 1/4-inch phone jacks for connecting microphone and musical instruments; stereo reverb and echo effects
  • i-CUBE LINK jack provides simple audio interfacing with Apple's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  • Free CUBE JAM app for iOS plays songs and minus-one tracks, and offers many features for music practice and learning
  • Includes cable for two-way communication (playback and recording) with iOS devices
  • Ideal for home use, offices, classrooms, recreation centers, and more
  • Attractive white finish

Sing and Play with High-Quality Sound

The CUBE Lite MONITOR is equipped with two ¼-inch inputs for plugging in a mic and mono instrument or one stereo instrument. Easy-to-use reverb and echo effects provide a satisfying ambience for singing and playing. The powerful 2.1 Channel sound system features stereo speakers and an integrated subwoofer, delivering amazingly rich and full sound for a compact monitor. For silent practice, you can plug in headphones to mute the onboard speakers.

Easy iOS Device Integration with i-CUBE LINK

i-CUBE LINK lets you easily integrate your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the CUBE Lite MONITOR for music practice, song playback, and recording. With a single-cable connection, the CUBE Lite becomes an audio interface for your iOS device, allowing you to play and/or record music with any audio app. Simply use the included cable to connect the iOS device to the i-CUBE LINK jack, and then use the CUBE Lite MONITOR to blend your mic/instrument with the iOS audio. The versatile i-CUBE LINK jack can also be used as a simple stereo input, enabling you to hook up nearly any music player or audio device and play it through the CUBE Lite.

CUBE JAM App

The free Roland CUBE JAM app turns your iOS device into a powerful tool for audio recording and music practice. Via i-CUBE Link, you can play and sing along with music from CUBE JAM through the CUBE Lite MONITOR, then capture your performance into the app. After you're done, you can adjust the volume of your performance and backing music independently in CUBE JAM, then export your mix as a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV file to share with friends and family. Also on tap are a number of cool features for music practice and learning songs, including tempo change, pitch adjustment to change the song key to suit your voice, and Center Cancel to create minus-one tracks for karaoke-style singing.

Direct Mode

Normally, recording from the CUBE Lite MONITOR into CUBE JAM or another app captures the sound as you hear it, with the onboard reverb/echo effect applied. Activating the CUBE Lite's Direct Mode feature lets you capture dry sounds while monitoring with the effect sound. Recording dry tracks in this way gives you the option to experiment with other processing later, using the audio app of your choice. Direct Mode also allows you to use real-time processing in any app, monitoring the live output with the CUBE Lite MONITOR.

Stylish Design for Modern Living Spaces

With its compact, tabletop design and attractive white finish, the CUBE Lite MONITOR blends in nicely with any living space in your home. In addition to being a great amp for mics and instruments, it also doubles as a high-quality home playback system for your digital music library. Use it in your living room for home entertainment and karaoke parties, your bedroom for music practice, or in your office as a high-quality sound system for your PC.

NS7 II features four channels, 16 backlit RGB velocity-sensitive MPC® pads from Akai Professional, expanded effects controls--including a full array of capacitive touch-activated knobs and filters--and the most comprehensive integration for Serato DJ available.

Here's the details direct from Numark...

For more than 20 years, Numark has set the pace in the world of digital DJing, empowering DJs with cutting-edge technology that has continually advanced the art form. In 2007, Numark and Serato® released NS7, a controller that blends different eras of DJing so completely it makes them virtually indistinguishable from each other. Since then, the powerful experience offered by NS7 has defined the top tier of DJ performance, setting the standard by which all other controllers are judged.

Now, with NS7 II, Numark is pushing the modern DJ's performance capability even further, incorporating iconic technology from Akai Professional, the world leader in music production technology and creator of the legendary MPC. NS7 II's 16 MPC pads can be instantly assigned to control five dynamic performance features in Serato DJ: Cues, Loop, Roll, Sampler, and Slicer. In addition, each pad features RGB illumination, allowing for a virtually endless amount of color variations assignable via MIDI. Vinyl platter control has never felt more familiar with its high- and low-torque motorized platters with real slip mats and real vinyl sitting on 3,600 ticks of resolution. NS7 II's four-channel mixer works with or without a computer and includes a full array of external device inputs. Capacitive touch-activated filter, gain, EQ, and effects knobs are other features incorporated from Akai Professional, which turn the knobs themselves into control surfaces. DJs can use them for instant-on parameter control, blending effects, and instant frequency kills.

"NS7 II is an interactive playground," said Chris Roman, Numark Product Manager. "It's built to squeeze every ounce of capability out of Serato DJ and push your creative limits. It's born to perform and to empower DJs with maximum live-performance creative capability."

WNAMM13: New Mic Aims To Takes The Guesswork Out Of Great Recording

Blue Microphones introduce Nessie Adaptive USB Microphone

Blue Microphones has announced Nessie, which they say is the solution for fearless recording that instantly delivers studio-enhanced sound for desktop recording of vocals, instruments, voiceovers and more. They tell us that Nessie adapts in real time, applying professional studio processing, combined with a built-in pop filter and internal shockmount to produce expertly finished sound, without the need for additional mixing or editing.

Nessie's key features and internal processing are specifically designed to combat the most common pitfalls of recording. The built-in, studio-grade pop filter and shockmount reduce harsh plosives and disruptive rumbling and vibrations, while the adaptive processing, including EQ, de-esser and level control, automatically smoothes and refines your audio in real time. Blue says that Nessie takes the audio guesswork out of great recording.

John Maier, CEO of Blue Microphones, told Sonic State, "With Nessie, we are excited to introduce fearless recording with a brand new category of digital microphones. In professional recording, there are common practices and fundamental processing used to edit and improve sound quality, but we understand that not everyone has the tools, time or engineering know-how to get the best results. So we built adaptive studio processing into Nessie. Nessie was designed to expertly apply the most common techniques instantly, allowing you to concentrate on your performance, not how to record it."

Nessie employs a single custom-tuned condenser capsule with a cardioid pattern. Nessie's three flexible recording modes are optimized for richer vocals, more detailed instruments or an option for raw audio for manual post-production editing. Nessie features a zero-latency headphone output for direct monitoring, which is critical for eliminating distracting delay, while headphone volume and instant mute are located directly on the microphone. Blue says that, for optimal positioning, Nessie's head adjusts with serpentine flexibility. Nessie is plug-and-play compatible via USB with both PC and Mac with driverless installation. For mobile recording, connect to iPad using Apple's camera adapters (30-pin to USB or Lighting to USB), sold separately.

WNAMM13: New Studio Monitors From Alesis

Elevate 3 and Elevate 5 active monitors launched

Alesis has announced their new Elevate 3 and Elevate 5 bi-amplified monitor speakers. Alesis says that, sold in pairs, these active monitors provide a smooth, rich sound in a space-saving format.

Alesis Project Manager Walter Skorupski, told Sonic State, "Our new Elevate series monitors have it all; they sound great, look great, AND they are easy on the wallet. We encourage anybody to stop by our booth at NAMM and hear them for themselves."

Here's what Alesis has to say...

Ideal for multimedia, gaming, desktop audio, or for use with a mobile device, the Alesis Elevate Series combines technology borrowed from professional Alesis monitors along with advanced components to create a smooth, solid sound--without taking up valuable studio or setup space. The Elevate 3 and Elevate 5 provide thoughtful options for creating a custom listening environment.

The front panel provides a convenient and easy-to-reach volume control. This control knob also serves as a power switch, paired with a blue LED indicator. Speaking of power, the Elevate 3 and Elevate 5 are equipped with an internal power supply, so there is no bulky external adapter. Left and right RCA inputs are located on the rear panel. An 1/8" stereo headphone output is provided on the front panel. The Elevate 3 provides 20 Watts of continuous power, or 10 Watts per speaker. The Elevate 5 delivers twice that amount at 40 Watts of continuous power, or 20 Watts per speaker.

The Elevate 3 features a 3" speaker for reproducing low-frequency sound. The Elevate 5 uses a larger 5" speaker for enhanced bass. Both models are equipped with a 1" soft-dome silk tweeter. This high-frequency driver is surrounded by an elliptical waveguide. This Directional Articulation technology creates a wider "sweet spot" for critical listening, while at the same time minimizing audio reflections from tabletops, etc. On the rear panel, there is a Bass Boost switch. The Elevate 3 includes an 1/8" sub output for using the Elevate monitors with an external subwoofer to provide an enhanced low-end response.

The custom-designed, high-density wood cabinet delivers a full, warm sound. Bass porting provides an extended lowend. Radial-edge baffles reduce distortion-causing edge diffraction, keeping the sound clear. Magnetic shielding allows the Elevate 3 and Elevate 5 monitors to be safely used near sensitive video displays and other electronic equipment.

WNAMM13: Vocal Production Synthesizer

Sonivox introduces Vocalizer Pro

Sonivox has announced Vocalizer Pro Vocal Production Synthesizer, which they tell us is the next-generation version of the Vocalizer MIDI-controlled audio effect. Here's their press release with all the details...

Vocalizer Pro brings a harmonic/melodic voice to any audio input, thus vocalizing the sound. Simply singing or speaking--or any type of vocalizing--can intuitively create deep and complex musical results. The patented technology delivers unparalleled signal processing, advanced vocoding, and powerful re-synthesis. In addition, Vocalizer Pro allows the creation of simple or complex vocal harmonies that can extend far beyond the natural limitations of the voice. Vocalizer Pro is excellent for processing any type of percussive or melodic audio track. One preset has the ability of producing thousands of different results. This is because Vocalizer Pro is not just for vocals.

"I'm more excited about what the end user is going to do with this, because I know what I can do with it,"according to Jason Jordan, Head of Soundware, Sonivox. "I can't even fathom what someone else is going to come up with. The sheer number of sound design possibilities is near infinite."

Vocalizer Pro provides two rows of pads for unique real-time control. One row allows multiple notes or harmonies to be stacked on each pad. The other allows parameters to be switched to new values. Snapshots provide instant switching of parameter controls, which can be triggered with the pads. For every pad, every automatable parameter can be set to a different setting. It's almost as if every pad is a completely different patch, thus allowing you to switch instantly between different parameter settings. These pads also control the settings of the effects as well. Vocalizer Pro features also include pitch pitch-and formant formant-shifting, detailed envelope control, sync-able LFOs, and double the number of effects and filters from the original Vocalizer.

Sonivox Vocalizer Pro can be used as a standalone program or as an AU, VST, or RTAS plug-in. Vocalizer Pro is compatible with 32- or 64-bit Mac or Windows systems.

Sonivox has also updated five of their most popular Virtual Instruments to include an integrated patch browser and native 64-bit support. These Version 2 releases will be available as a free download to all registered customers. Updated instruments and improvements include:

MultiMix 16 USB FX

Alesis has added two new models to their popular MultiMix Series of live and recording mixers. As the name suggests, the MultiMix 10 Wireless now features Bluetooth capabilities, and the MultiMix 16 USB FX now offers onboard effects.

Alesis Project Manager Walter Skorupski, told Sonic State, "These mixers bring exciting new features to our popular MultiMix lineup. We are very pleased to add these models to the mix."

MultiMix 10 Wireless
The MultiMix 10 Wireless is a 10-channel, rack-mount mixer that is well suited to smaller clubs and venues, houses of worship, and traveling systems. Channels 1-4 are mono and offer both XLR mic inputs (selectable phantom power is provided) and balanced 1/4" inputs. TRS inserts are also provided. Channels 5/6 and 7/8 are stereo-paired channels, offering left and right balanced 1/4" ins. Channels 7/8 also offer a pair of stereo RCA inputs. Configured in stereo, Channels 9/10 are dedicated to receiving a stereo audio signal from any Bluetooth-enabled device. Simple, single-button front-panel pairing makes it easy. On the back panel, the MultiMix 10 Wireless features 1/4" aux sends and 1/4" balanced stereo returns. An 1/8" jack allows a non-Bluetooth source to access Channel 9. Located alongside the master fader, the twin 10-stage LED meters feature red peak indicators. A dedicated headphone jack is provided; the level is controlled by the monitor/phones knob. A very handy 1/8" output provides the main mix directly from the front panel.

MultiMix 16 USB FX
The new MultiMix 16 USB FX performs double-duty as a versatile live and recording mixer and as a USB audio (16-bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz) interface for computer-based recording, even doing both at the same time. This class-compliant connection provides true plug-and-play connectivity with the computer and nearly any recording software. The versatility of the MultiMix 16 USB FX is ideal for the performing musician with a home or project studio.

The onboard processor (FX) offers 8 effect types, with individual sends on each channel. Eight mono channels include both 1/4" and XLR inputs, with selectable phantom power. WNAMM13: New M-Audio Keyboards

Controller range extended with three new Axiom AIR models

M-Audio has added three new Axiom AIR models to the upper echelons of their Axiom USB/MIDI keyboard and pad controller lineup: the Axiom AIR 61, Axiom AIR 49, and Axiom AIR 25. Created in conjunction with AIR Music Technology, M-Audio says that these keyboards were designed to deliver a high level of integration with a broad array of music software titles. These new models join the previously released and compact Axiom AIR Mini 32.

Unlike other keyboard controllers that include trial and demo versions of music software, M-Audio's strong partnerships with AIR Music Technology and Avid® allow each Axiom AIR 61, 49 and 25 model to come complete with two exclusive and complementary music creation applications: Ignite by AIR and Pro Tools Express from Avid.

By removing many of the hurdles associated with computer-based music-making, Ignite delivers the most streamlined means to quickly capture your best musical ideas. According to AIR Product Manager Samara Winterfeld, "Ignite was designed from the ground up to provide instant integration and controller mapping with Axiom AIR and every M-Audio keyboard. This is one less thing a musician has to worry about when inspiration strikes."

From Ignite, musical ideas can be easily migrated to the included copy of Avid Pro Tools Express, providing customers with access to the production capabilities of the industry-leading DAW software. Avid Pro Tools Express includes the required iLok USB key--a $49.99 retail value.

The bold white and brushed metal design of the Axiom AIR series features many aesthetic and ergonomic enhancements not found in previous generations of controllers. These features include illuminated knob and pad controls, angled backlit display, longer-throw faders, and clearance under the body providing a path for cabling, keeping studio and workspace tidy.

Pitch bend and modulation wheels allow for spontaneous expression, while octave/transpose buttons allow the keyboard to cover the entire note range, in any key. In addition to measuring how hard you strike, the pads also respond to pressure for enhanced control. Both keys and pads feature a wide range of touch curves to match any playing style.

The pads, buttons, and rotary encoder knobs feature three banks of controller assignments; the current bank is indicated by tri-color illumination. All controller assignments can be freely made from the front panel and easily identified using the dedicated Identify button. The unique Pad Learn function makes it easy to assign instrument sounds to pads. Best yet, each Axiom AIR model features M-Audio's HyperControl to automatically map the controllers to popular recording software and virtual instrument titles.

Although all three Axiom AIR models share some family traits, each one is designed with a specific user in mind:

Axiom AIR 25
Ideal for the modern beat-making musician, the Axiom AIR 25 offers a generous 16 pads and 25 synth-action keys--with aftertouch. Assignable controls include 8 rotary encoder knobs and 1 long-throw 70mm fader.
Axiom AIR 49
Balancing size and features to satisfy a broad range of players and composers, the Axiom AIR 49 features 12 pads and 49 synth-action keys--with aftertouch. Assignable controls include 8 rotary encoder knobs, 9 buttons, and 9 long-throw 70mm faders.
Axiom AIR 61
Providing the accomplished keyboardist with an inspiring playing experience, the Axiom Air 61 delivers 61 TruTouch, semi-weighted keys with aftertouch. Assignable controls include 8 rotary encoder knobs, 9 buttons, and 9 long-throw 70mm faders.

WNAMM13: Plug-Ins Emulate Classic 80s and 90s Reverbs

Native Instruments introduces Reverb Classics

Native Instruments has launched REVERB CLASSICS, which they describe as two premium-quality algorithmic reverbs inspired by renowned studio hardware. They say that, while each effect has its own distinct sound, both provide a rich, harmonic character that adds dimension and depth to any source. A first-of-its-kind display provides visual feedback to monitor the effect's output in real time – a powerful feature for quickly shaping the effect with ease and precision. The REVERB CLASSICS were created in cooperation with Softube, the acclaimed Swedish company renowned for their painstakingly accurate emulations of audio hardware. Here's the full details in NI's own words...

The REVERB CLASSICS faithfully recreate two renowned algorithmic reverb units that rose to prominence 1980s and 1990s. Each has been featured on countless studio recordings and is a standard effect in top studios around the world. The RC 24 provides a rich, dark, and instantly identifiable sound suitable for anything from subtle widening to dramatic sound design. The RC 48, while sharing some similarities, sounds richer, lush, and somewhat brighter by comparison.

The most striking feature of the REVERB CLASSICS is the prominent graphical display, which takes up roughly half of the interface. This display effectively visualizes the shape and depth of the reverb, as well as the decay of the reverb tail. The display immediately reacts to parameter adjustments, allowing users to visually monitor the effect in real time, and providing a new approach to reverb design.

The RC 24 is inspired by one of the first digital studio reverbs to gain wide popularity in recording studios around the world. Featuring Large Hall, Small Hall, and Room reverb algorithms, the distinctive sound of 12-bit A/D converters provides a unique quality that cuts through dense mixes with a unique presence. The RC 24 is equally useful on acoustic and electronic sounds for adding rich dimension, texture, and space while still preserving the original harmonics of a sound. Pushed to extreme settings, it can be used as a creative sound design tool, transforming relatively simple sounds into metallic percussive textures, dense, drone-like pads, or anything in between.

The RC 48 delivers two hall algorithms inspired by a classic studio reverb heard on numerous gold and platinum recordings, as well as game, TV, and film soundtracks. The RC 48 delivers lush, musical reverb renowned for the depth it gives to vocals and acoustic instruments. A wide variety of versatile textures can be achieved through adjusting the Diffusion and Spread controls, while an additional Effect option on the Size fader allows users to create interesting new modulation effects. The Random Hall algorithm also features Spin and Wander controls, providing random movement with lively, natural tails.

All three effects run as VST, AU, or AAX plug-ins inside all popular host sequencers. A free demo of each effect is available from the Native Instruments website.

Pricing and Availability:
The REVERB CLASSICS bundle is available at the NI Online Shop for $199 / 199 EUR. The individual effects are also available separately: RC 24 $149 / 149 EUR, RC 48 $149 / 149 EUR.

MPX8 also comes with a large library of standard samples built in, which can be used for live performance in front of a crowd, on a radio show, or for in-studio production. Its bright blue backlit display and intuitive interface make for easy operation in any amount of light. A 1/8-inch headphone output, two balanced 1/4-inch outputs, and five-pin MIDI and USB MIDI inputs and outputs are onboard.

"With MPX8, we're giving musicians a quick and convenient way to have one-touch access to a virtually unlimited number of sounds, shots, stabs, and drops," said Dan Gill, Akai Professional Product Manager. MPX8 comes with a drag-and-drop sample editor for Mac® and PC for easy sample conversion. Users can also save sample sets together as kits for easy recall and even tune and add reverb to samples.

MAX25 is a compact version of the innovative MAX49 USB/MIDI/CV keyboard controller that was released in 2012. MAX25 has all of the same cutting-edge features as MAX49, including CV/Gate output, semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, a built-in step sequencer, expanded arpeggiator, and revolutionary LED touch faders for gradual or instant parameter value changes. The difference between MAX49 and MAX25 only lies in the number of onboard controls. Where MAX49 has 49 keys, 8 faders, and 12 pads, MAX25 has 25, 4, and 8, respectively. Like MAX49, MAX25 will come with AkaiConnect automatic-mapping software and Mackie Control® and HUI® modes for instant compatibility with many DAWs.

"This is a controller that's made to be in front of a crowd," said Gill. "It's everything people love about MAX49 but in a compact package that will fit perfectly in front of a laptop on stage."

WNAMM13: BEHRINGER Launches iQ Series Networked Loudspeakers

2,500 Watts of iNuke DSP Power on tap

BEHRINGER has launched the all-new iQ series networked loudspeaker line as their flagship range in the live speaker segment. Boasting networking and signal processing technologies from KLARK TEKNIK, acoustic design by TURBOSOUND, and built around BEHRINGER's iNuke Class D amplifiers, the iQ series sets a new standard for connectivity, precision and performance. Users of BEHRINGER's mixers incorporating ULTRANET can now route digital audio across a network of connected speakers using only CAT5 cable.

Al Walker, Senior Product Manager for parent company MUSIC Group, told Sonic State, "Our design objective was advanced integration between our growing digital mixer family and this new, high-performance loudspeaker line. The iQ series breaks new ground for active, portable live sound speakers by adding zero-configuration digital audio networking over our proven ULTRANET technology, while simplifying connections, eliminating ground loops and other typical problems."

The iQ line consists of four full range cabinets – iQ15, iQ12, iQ10 and iQ8 – that share a common set of features but differ only in low-frequency driver size. All are powered, 2-way design with 1.75" titanium-diaphragm compression drivers for exceptional high-frequency reproduction. High acceleration 15"/12"/10"/8" LF drivers provide incredibly deep bass and acoustic power. Two powered subwoofer cabinets – the iQ18S and iQ15S – round out the series and utilize the famed TURBOSOUND 18"/15" long-excursion transducers with high-temperature voice coils.

Among the unique set of capabilities within the iQ series is the DSP power of KLARK TEKNIK. Total system control and driver protection–plus speaker modeling of some of the industries most respected loudspeakers (available on the full-range models only)–is just the start. This digital engine controls a phase/time-correction crossover, EQ, noise gate, automatic feedback eliminator and much more to maintain optimal performance. Set up and adjustments can be done using the LCD display on the speaker or remotely using a computer and BEHRINGER's free software download.

Understanding that high performance loudspeaker cabinets require high-powered amplification, the iQ series uses BEHRINGER's class-leading iNUKE power amplifiers in every system; each packing a whopping 2,500 watts. Professional-grade locking PowerCon AC input and loop-through connectors minimize cable runs while ensuring that the show goes on, even after the lighting guy trips over the power cable.

The BEHRINGER iQ Series is affordable enough to be used in smaller venues such as theaters, schools and houses of worship; yet powerful enough to take on festival stages, dance clubs and corporate convention center gigs.

WNAMM13: KRK Founder Designs New BEHRINGER Studio Monitors

NEKKST K5 and K8 are designed by Keith R. Klawitter

BEHRINGER has launched the NEKKST K5 and K8 next-generation, high-resolution near-field monitors developed by renowned monitor designer and founder of KRK, Keith R. Klawitter. They tell us that an array of innovations, including a patent-pending means of switching between studio tunings, as well as ultra-linear DSP correction, multiple analog and digital inputs, iOS and Bluetooth™ connectivity are included. Both models come with ultra-high-resolution 1" silk dome tweeters and long-throw glass fiber cone woofers; 8" and 5" respectively.

Costa Lakoumentas, SVP Marketing for BEHRINGER parent company MUSIC Group, told Sonic State, "Our primary consideration was acoustic perfection, and we knew that with Keith Klawitter leading the project we were going to nail that objective, but we also wanted to make NEKKST monitors more relevant to users who own them, so we added Studio-vibe tunings and topped it all off with Bluetooth connectivity so you can stream your personal playlist to the speakers after you're done recording."

Connectivity for a wide variety of digital sources is easily accomplished via the onboard USB input. Analog inputs feature XLR, TRS and RCA connectors--and can be used simultaneously with the USB source. Both monitors feature Bluetooth connectivity for streaming audio from a Bluetooth-enabled device. A "Planet Earth" power supply provides noise-free audio with superior transient response, plus efficient power conservation worldwide. Behringer tells us that a truly-innovative iOS APP allows the user to adjust the K8/K5's acoustic characteristics right from their seat in the "sweet spot" via iPhone or iPad. In addition, says Behringer, users can download models of iconic studio monitors, as well as listening environments that replicate EQ curves of world-class producers and artists for stunningly professional results.

WNAMM13: Mic And FX Bundles For Singers

TC-Helicon and Sennheiser launch two new packages

Vocal effects expert TC-Helicon and audio specialist Sennheiser have launched two attractive bundles at NAMM 2013 that give singers and singer/guitarists the power to unlock new creative possibilities from their vocal performances. The packages include Sennheiser's new e 835 fx, a special version of their popular evolution e 835 microphone with an effects control button, and an option of either the VoiceLive Play vocal effects unit for singers or the VoiceLive Play GTX for singer/guitarists from TC-Helicon.

Michael Polten, Director Customer Relationship Management at Sennheiser, told Sonic State, "These bundles will not only provide singers with a great sounding microphone, but also give them full control of their vocals with amazing audio effects."

Kevin Alexander, CEO of TC-Helicon, added, "These packages are an ideal choice for performing vocalists who want to perfect their live performances. The bundles also give a great start to aspiring singers who can rely on a best-selling professional stage microphone combined with an effects unit from a manufacturer that hundreds of thousands of performing musicians worldwide put their trust in."

Here's the companies' descriptions of their products:

The Microphone

A special version of Sennheiser's most popular vocal microphone, the evolution e 835 fx, is the heart of both new bundles. The microphone features an effects control button that allows the singer to perform multiple actions, like switching presets or toggling HIT, LOOP, and TALK functions – inconspicuously and conveniently, without having to reach for the effects unit. "The microphone is the instrument of the singer. It's a very personal tool that needs to be relied on as extension of their physical performance," explains Michael Polten. "The extremely popular evolution microphone delivers the quality build and sound quality that rewards that trust."

The e 835 fx features powerful sound with a presence boost for improved projection on stage. Its neodymium transducer magnet pushes output levels very high, making it possible to balance signals against higher levels of on-stage amplification. The transducer can handle extremely high sound pressure levels in excess of 150 dB.

The mic's shock-mount capsule has a cardioid pick-up pattern with good ambient noise and feedback rejection to enable greater signal levels to be delivered before feedback. The typical proximity effect of a cardioid is optimised for close vocal work, while the rugged mic construction with a die-cast zinc casing provides an optimum handling and weight profile.

The Vocal Effects Units

VoiceLive Play gives vocalists full control of their performance – whether at gigs or when practising at home
TC-Helicon makes the bundle available with either of its popular vocal processors, VoiceLive Play or VoiceLive Play GTX. "With these processors, you do not have to worry about your sound at varying live performance locations," says Kevin Alexander. "The VoiceLive Play units will heighten your performance with effects such as backing harmonies, reverb and vocal double tracking, independent of the venue's console." At home, the effects units can be used to work on songs and explore new styles, or to practise using their built-in pitch display and singing stats.

VoiceLive Play has 'ears': via its built-in RoomSense microphones, it will detect the key of outside musical sources to create perfect vocal harmonies – or to provide a live stage mix for vocalists using wireless monitors. It features adaptive EQ, compression, de-essing, and pitch correction. Effects also include the TC-Helicon VLOOPTM performance looper, and there are over 200 genre presets to select from, with hundreds more to download for free, allowing singers to easily find the style and sound they are looking for.

For practicing, vocalists can connect their MP3 player and record themselves – the unit is even able to cancel existing vocals in music. Further in/outputs include stereo XLR outputs, a headphone socket and USB connector for audio streaming and recording.

A dream machine for both pro and practising guitarists, the VoiceLive Play GTX is the first ever combination of complete vocal and guitar processing

VoiceLive Play GTX for singer/guitarists adds award-winning guitar effects to the ample vocal effects that VoiceLive Play offers. "This is the first ever combination of complete vocal and guitar processing – a genuine dream machine for both pro and practising guitarists," Kevin Alexander comments. A wide choice of artist and song-inspired presets offers signature vocal and guitar sounds, with a full editing ability allowing users to define their own unique style.

The bundles will be available from late March 2013 through TC-Helicon's dealer network. The e 835 fx microphone is also sold separately through Sennheiser's dealer network and can be used to control effects parameters on all TC-Helicon vocal effects units launched since 2010*.

WNAMM13: Portable Speakers Designed For Musicians

IK Multimedia announces iLoud portable speakers that sound like studio monitors

IK Multimedia has announced iLoud, which they describe as the first portable stereo speakers designed for musicians. Here's what they have to say about them...

IK leveraged its 16 years of pro-audio engineering expertise, and its experience as the leading developer of mobile music-creation apps and accessories, to design battery-operated speakers that combine superior power, pristine frequency response and amazing low-end in an ultra-portable form factor that make them the perfect alternative to studio speakers for music creation and composition on the go.

The iLoud line consists of two models, iLoud and iLoud MINI, both of which provide musicians with sonic accuracy that's on par with professional studio monitors, making it possible, for the first time, to compose, record, and mix from a mobile speaker system.

Dynamic Duo
Despite their diminutive size, both iLoud speakers are indeed very loud. In fact, they're 2 to 3 times louder than comparable size speakers. The iLoud model offers a blasting 40W RMS of power, and it's little brother, iLoud MINI, a robust 12W RMS.

Both iLoud models provide highly accurate reproduction of a wide range of musical styles from rock, hip-hop and electronic dance music, to more nuanced and sonically demanding genres like classical and acoustic. The speakers are equipped with onboard DSP, for maintaining accuracy and efficiency at all volume levels, and high-quality, custom-designed neodymium loudspeakers. iLoud is equipped with a bi-amped 4-driver array, and iLoud MINI with a pair of full-range speakers. The enclosures feature bass-reflex and passive radiators construction, which helps create their superior bass response, with tilted profile for perfect listening position.

Plug and Play Convenience
iLoud also offers the possibility to connect a guitar, bass or dynamic microphone directly to the speaker and process the sound with a multitude of real-time effects apps. Featuring the same circuitry as IK's iRig – the most popular mobile interface of all time – the input allows users to plug in an instrument and access AmpliTube or other audio apps on their mobile device for practicing, performing and recording. The input also accommodates dynamic microphones, making it possible to run an app such as IK's VocaLive for realtime vocal effects and recording.

Ultra-Portability
In addition to their impressive response, volume, and features, the iLoud speakers are surprisingly small, exceptionally portable, and can be used everywhere. iLoud MINI, the smaller of the two, is only about the width and height of an iPad mini while iLoud has the size of an iPad. Only 6cm / 2.3" thick, either model can easily fit in a laptop bag or backpack. Both iLoud and iLoud MINI are also equipped with a high-performance Li-Ion rechargeable battery with smart power-management features that reduce its power consumption, making possible to go long periods without recharging, an important factor for mobile users.

Wired and Wireless
Both iLoud models support Bluetooth operation, which adds even more to their mobility. Users can stream music to them from any compatible mobile device such as an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad for casual listening. For sound sources like MP3 players that don't have Bluetooth capabilities, the iLoud speakers each have a stereo 1/8" mini-jack input for connecting line-level devices such as home stereos, DJ gear, mixers, MP3 players, and more.

Pricing and Availability:
iLoud will be priced $299.99 / €239.99 and iLoud MINI $199.99 / €159.99 (excluding taxes) and they will be available in the second quarter of 2013 from the IK network of music and electronic retailers around the world.

ReFill Based On Synapse Antidote Synth

Soundcells releases Antidote Signature for Reason 6.5 and up

Soundcells tells us that Antidote Signature for Reason 6.5 and up is based on the Antidote Rack Extension from Synapse Audio - a synthesizer that offers a powerful architecture to produce more than mere 'bread and butter' sounds, combined with a clear and logical user interface. They say that, thanks to its high quality oscillators and the zero-latency filter design - among some other great features, the user can be sure always to get a very clear and powerful sound out of Antidote.

A Soundcells spokesperson told us, "The Antidote Signature ReFill is an impressive proof of this, and it brings highly playable and great sounding patches to the user´s hand. It´s not genre-specific, so Wurlitzer-like pianos, modern screaming but also classic hardware-like leads, punching basses, warm & rich pads and surprising textures emphasize why this little gem should be part of everybody´s portfolio."

Antidote Signature Contents:

  • 70 combinator patches
  • 100 Antidote patches: Atmos & Textures, Bass, Keys, Leads, Pads, Rhythmic, SFX

WNAMM13: Single Trigger Pad

Roland BT-1 Bar Trigger Pad is an add-on for V-Pads and acoustic drums

Roland tells us tthat the compact and affordable BT-1 Bar Trigger Pad makes it easy to add electronic triggering to any drum kit. They say that, with a curved shape that mounts on the side of a V-Drums V-Pad or acoustic drum, it provides convenient playing access without disturbing your existing kit layout. A spokesperson told us, "The BT-1 is great not only for playing sounds in a V-Drums module or SPD-series percussion pad, but also for convenient control of a variety of functions like start/stop of backing songs and phrase loops, and much more."

Here's the details directly from Roland...

Features

  • Curved shape for mounting on a V-Pad or acoustic drum
  • Quick and easy mounting through a drum tension rod; attachment parts for standard rod-type mounts included.
  • Internal design eliminates false triggering while playing surrounding drums and/or pads.
  • Use with a V-Drums module or SPD-series percussion pad to trigger sounds and control functions such as start/stop of backing songs. and phrase loops, effects on/off, kit selection, tap tempo, and more.
  • Great way to add electronic triggering to any acoustic kit or additional triggering to a V-Drums set.

Additional Triggering for V-Drums Kits

If you're a V-Drums player, the compact BT-1 makes it simple to incorporate additional triggers without having to add more pads. This gives you access to additional sounds, as well as convenient control of an enormous range of performance features in your V-Drums module or an SPD-series percussion pad. And with its small size, it's easy to add additional BT-1s as needed to continuously expand the expressive power of your Roland percussion rig.

Easily Incorporate Electronics with Acoustic Drums

The BT-1 is an easy and affordable way to integrate electronics with your acoustic kit. Unlike large round pads and inconvenient foot switches, the BT-1 blends seamlessly with your kit without adjusting your setup or playing style. Simply plug the BT-1 into a trigger input on a V-Drums module or SPD-series percussion pad and enjoy a universe of new possibilities that Roland electronic percussion brings.
