The Masters of Funk Play the Sub Phatty

Stevie Wonder, Bernie Worrell, Dr Lonnie Smith and Larry Dunn

The Moog booth always has pne or two major names gravitate to it. This year was no different - the introduction of the Sub Phatty synth (see our in-depth video) meant there were many waiting their turn to have a play.
Imagine, Stevie Wonder waiting inline to get a go..
Moog posted a video of several Masters of Funk and Jazz who came a long to tinkle the Sub.
We hear a dry line recording only, but still there's some serious skill at work.
In this video we have:
Larry Dunn - Earth Wind and Fire
Dr Lonnie Smith - Acid Jazz Master
and my favourite
Stevie Wonder - check his monosynth style, those slide and slurs are genius. I think I recognise "Boogie On Reggae Woman"
Bernie Worrell - Parliament Funkadelic and Talking Heads

Drums For iOS

Sunsine Audio releases Beatmaker 2 and Nanostudio versions of Wavshaper

Sunsine Audio has announced that they are releasing Beatmaker 2 and Nanostudio versions of Waveshaper drum kits and samples.

The iOS versions will be available exclusively through Sunsine Audio, while the original Wav versions will remain available from Waveshaper. Both versions are priced exactly the same.

The first "converted" release is - STIX 305. Here's what Sunsine audio has to say about it...

"The SoundMaster Stix 305 is a very rare analogue drum machine from the early eighties. You get both the cheesy, mellow sound of the psychedelic 70s, plus the acid hats of the 80s !

This WaveShaper sample pack is a quite unique occasion to meet this very little known and lovely beat box. Your tracks will get a great retro sound, whether you are an electronic funk producer, and acid freak or a true analogue sound lover.

The Stix305 was recorded using some tube preamp and compressor and a vintage eq on top of it to keep the analogue vibe on the full recording chain

As the Stix305 features few sounds, I recorded them at various compression, gain and eq settings and made several takes of each sound in order to get some subtle variations that your round-robin soft sampler will love for sure !
There are also a dozen of loops plus a more punchy kit, processed using some strong tube distortion."

Features:

  • Requires Beatmaker 2 or Nanostudio
  • 43 One Hit Samples
  • 3 Kits (Clean, Alt, Distorted)
  • 3 .bmkz files for Beatmaker 2
  • 3 .trg files for Nanostudio
  • 13 Bonus loops in .wav format
  • Easy Installation Instructions

$2.90

New Synth For Macs

Sinevibes releases new Torsion hybrid synthesiser AU plug-in

Sinevibes has announced Torsion, its new monophonic Audio Unit instrument plugin. They tell us that Torsion is built upon a unique combination of multiple synthesis technologies and modulation sources, wrapped into an intuitive interface which makes working with it as fun as playing a game. Sinevibes believes that it has a very distinctive, original sound character – and is ready to push your musical creativity in a fresh new direction. Here's the details in Sinevibes' own words...

Reinvented classics

At first glance, Torsion's sound structure is similar to a traditional subtractive synthesiser – three oscillators going into a low-pass filter and into an amplifier – and it's certainly as easy to use. But Torsion's oscillators are completely different: they produce simple additive waves based on just a few partials, which are then enriched with lots of new spectral content using a technique called waveshape modelling (which literally "curls" the wave in real time). To further spice the sound up, there is a ring modulator and an audio-range oscillator for filter FM.

Modulation galore

Torsion features as many as four separate LFO generators - one for each oscillator and one for the filter and output amplifier. In addition to precise synchronisation, each LFO cycle can be self-randomised, which makes the modulation rhythmical yet non-repetitive. There are also two AHDSR envelope generators, as well as a two-dimensional chaos oscillator.

Interactive experience

The interface of Torsion is designed with high-contrast, colour coded elements, which lets you operate the instrument intuitively in just a few minutes. It also includes graphic representations for every building block – oscillator waves, LFO phases, envelope shapes and filter spectrum all change as you modify them, making sound design with Torsion a truly engaging, fun process.

Specifications

  • Three oscillators each with four basic additive waveforms and four waveshape models.
  • -24 dB/octave resonant low-pass filter.
  • -12 dB/octave high-pass filter.
  • Ring modulator.
  • Modulation oscillator for low-pass filter FM.
  • Four tempo-synchronised LFO generators with four waveforms and per-cycle randomisation.
  • Two AHDSR envelope generators.
  • Two-dimensional chaos modulation generator based on Lorenz attractor.

Torsion is immediately available as an Audio Unit plugin for OS X 10.6 or later (32/64 bit Intel), and costs $49.

Monitor Isolation Pads Now Available

Auralex is shipping their ProPAD and ProPAD XL Monitor Isolators

Auralex Acoustics is now shipping its ProPAD and ProPAD XL Monitor Isolation Pads from its ISO (Instant Sound Optimizer) line. Here's what they have to say about them...

The ProPAD is a premium-performance variant on Auralex's popular MoPAD™. The ProPAD features a durable, three layer highly damped construction with increased durability and structural integrity, and provides superior isolation from the vibrations and resonant energy created by studio monitors. The ProPAD prevents this energy from being transmitted into the supporting furniture, which would greatly color the monitors' sound and degrade their imaging. The ProPAD is sold in stereo pairs and is designed to work with monitors employing up to 8" woofers. ProPAD's updated design features a 0.75" layer of Melamine-wrapped MDF covered with a thick layer of Auralex's proprietary IsoPuck™ isolation material, which is made of recycled rubber. Six stick-on feet, also made from IsoPuck material, are supplied for flat or angled applications. The ProPAD is the perfect solution for decoupling monitors and reducing structural vibration in all manner of sound-critical spaces, including recording studios, post-production/edit suites, mobile recording facilities, hi-fi listening rooms, home theaters or anywhere a monitor/speaker isolation platform is needed to improve sonic purity.

The ProPAD XL speaker isolation product is a larger version of the award-winning ProPAD. The XL version is designed to work with horizontally oriented, twin woofer monitors and provides the same isolation qualities found in the popular ProPAD. ProPAD XL is the perfect solution for decoupling monitors and reducing structural vibration from larger format monitor speakers.

Features:

  • Increased midrange resolution
  • Deeper, more focused soundstage
  • Improved low-frequency definition
  • Angle adjustable to optimize listening axis
  • Significant reduction of extraneous mechanical resonance

Howard Jones New Studio Shows Return To Classics

New studio layout ready for new tunes

Howard Jones posted a shot of his new studio layout:

"Complete reform of my studio this week ready for new work!"

Looking at the instruments of choice, we could be expecting a retro flavour to the new material.

From top left to right:

Roland Juno 60, Moog Prodigy, Roland Jupiter 8 , Sequential Circuits Pro-One

Yamaha VL-1, Roland TR-808 - not sure what flavour of Roland Stage Piano and the beautiful Steinway Grand Piano.

We've been there to film some exclusive Jupiter 80 footage - its a truly inspiring work room with a massive panoramic window overlooking fields.

Nice touch, if you look closely you can see the soft bristle paint brush for keeping dust out of the nooks and crannies.

Line 6 Advances StageScape M20d Recording Capabilities

New v1.1 software brings enhanced recording, file management and playback

Line 6 has announced v1.1 of the StageScape M20d smart mixing system. They tell us that this software update features enhanced recording, file management and playback capabilities that make it even easier for musicians to record their live shows, soundchecks and rehearsals.

Max Gutnik, Vice President of Product Management, Line 6, told us, "With StageScape M20d, musicians can capture high-quality multi-track recordings of their live performances without connecting a computer. The enhanced functionality in v1.1 makes it easier than ever to record live shows, capture the spontaneous song ideas that develop during rehearsals, and more."

As part of the completely new recording user interface, users can place markers in sessions for fast access to different parts of a track, or to indicate the start and stop times of songs in a full-length live performance. It is also possible to import multi-track backing tracks from external sources and utilize them in a live performance, making StageScape M20d the center of the production.

In addition, the software provides improved Wi-Fi management, enabling StageScape M20d and iPad® devices to join an existing network for faster, easier integration and functionality throughout the entire network. The update also allows monitor outputs to be linked in stereo--ideal for in-ear monitoring or creating separate broadcast feeds.
