The RoadHog series is one of the most popular brands in the RapcoHorizon family of products. Once a performer uses our RoadHog cable on stage, they never go back. With the addition of the SilverHog, we know the series will only trend upward."

Here's the details in the company's own words...

Built with the original RoadHog jacket, which The RapcoHorizon Company designed specifically for the touring musician, SilverHog cables also have pure silver-plated copper conductors and shields. This upgrade provides a link between ultimate sound quality and extreme durability. Like all RoadHog cables, the SilverHog comes with a limited lifetime warranty for further protection against wear and tear.

The SilverHog guitar cable is equipped with a 20awg pure silver-plated copper conductor, encased in a 95-percent pure silver-plated copper spiral shield with a RoadHog jacket that is incredibly durable, lays flat and coils easily. The SilverHog mic cable includes two 24awg silver-plated copper conductors and features the same spiral shield and jacket as the guitar cable.

WNAMM13: 3D Printed Guitars And Stuff

ODD Printed guitars and other nifty stuff

Winter NAMM 2013 - ODD

Down in the basement we found ODD a company showing off some incredibly intricate carved body guitars. They werent hand made, but created using advanced 3D laser printing techniques by Olaf Diegel. We interviewed Olaf for our Amped guitar channel in November last year, but this was the first time we saw the results in the flesh. They certainly are impressive, its hard to imagine just how its possible to carve such detail actually inside the body with a single piece of material.

We also saw some other objects actually being formed by working desktop 3d printers, on a smaller scale, but still equally fascinating. What stuck me was Olaf's intense enthusiasm for his work, and this was on a NAMM Sunday, when most exhibitors are worn down and lacklustre.More Information

WNAMM13: 4ms Pingable Animation Generator

Video effects from CV in modular form

Winter NAMM 2013 - 4MS

4MS Pedals showed us their Pingable Animation Generator - for use in their analog video system it gives you ways to animate you your live video output.

  • Two channel animation (curve) generator uses LZX Visionary sync header
  • All outputs and CV inputs are scaled to 0-1V, for compatibility with other LZX Visionary modules (trigger threshold is 0.5V)
  • Each channel has two CV outputs: ENV (non-inverted, 0V to 1V) and 1-ENV (inverted, 1V to 0V)
  • Each channel has two gate outputs: End-of-Rise/Hold, and End-of-Fall
  • Trapezoidal waveforms (fade-in, hold, fade-out) can be obtained with the Hold jack and knob, which sets the ratio between the total fading time and holding time.
  • VCA input modulates the amplitude of the ENV and 1-ENV outputs (limited video-rate)
  • Link button connects Ping clock of two channels
  • At output frequencies less than the frame rate clock, all outputs update only at the top of each frame. This prevents ugly "chops" in the middle of frames
  • At frequencies greater than frame rate, the outputs are re-synced at the top of each frame
  • Tap/ping clock can be divided/multiplied from /64 to x64
  • Many similar features to the PEG:
  • Time length of animation curve (ping clock) is set by tap-tempo or external ping clock
  • Curve selection is linear, exponential, or log, or any combination, including blends (e.g. 25% log, 75% linear).
  • Skew sets the ratio of rise (fade-in) and fall (fade-out) times
  • CV inputs for all parameters (Div/Mult, Skew, Curve, Hold)
  • Trigger input for each channel
  • Cycle mode button for each channel

WNAMM13: Line 6 Expands The StageSource Family

New L2m and L2t Loudspeakers introduced

Line 6 has announced the new StageSource L2m and L2t loudspeakers, which they say expands the StageSource family with models designed for even greater flexibility and portability. They tell us that, with unmatched sound, unparalleled DSP power, modular architecture and proprietary L6 LINK digital networking, the new StageSource L2m and StageSource L2t loudspeakers deliver more than any other loudspeaker for musicians.

Max Gutnik, Vice President of Product Management, Line 6, told us, "StageSource L2-series loudspeakers are designed to deliver great sound from solo performances in coffee shops to full-on rock shows. We took the same unsurpassed sound quality, powerful DSP, feedback suppression and digital networking technology as our award-winning StageSource L3 series, and placed it within an even more portable form factor. As a result, StageSource L2 provides more than any other powered loudspeaker in its class--and delivers unparalleled power, ease and flexibility when combined with StageScape M20d as part of the Line 6 live sound ecosystem."

Here's more details direct from Line 6

StageSource L2m is an 800-watt, two-way, bi-amped speaker system that delivers great power, sound quality and dependability. StageSource L2t adds an onboard mixer that provides world-class effects, acoustic guitar modeling and feedback suppression, making it a self-contained live sound solution. StageSource L2m and L2t are designed for seamless integration with other Line 6 live sound products, so customers can use them to extend the capabilities of a StageSource L3m- or L3t-based system, pair them with the 1,200-watt L3s subwoofer, and more.

Both L2-series speakers feature six powerful DSP-based Smart Speaker modes, which enable musicians to optimize the loudspeakers' output for a variety of performance scenarios including front-of-house PA, floor monitor, personal PA, keyboard backline, acoustic guitar backline, or for use with a multi-effects guitar processor as a high-performance electric guitar speaker system. Onboard accelerometers and pole-mount sensors automatically detect the speakers' orientation and set their Smart Speaker modes accordingly.

In live sound situations that require two or more speakers, the StageSource L2 series--as well as the larger L3-series speakers--use a proprietary digital networking protocol called L6 LINK to simplify setup. Loudspeakers will automatically self-configure, pan stereo signals, adjust Smart Speaker modes and perform system-wide optimization for exceptional sound. If users add one or more StageSource L3s subwoofers, the system automatically sends them the summed signals and sets the crossovers. When combined, Line 6 live sound products form an intelligent ecosystem that sets up faster and helps musicians sound their best.

WNAMM13: The Keyboard Amp Reinvented

Alto Professional introduces the Kick12 and Kick15

Alto Professional has introduced the Kick12 and Kick15 four-channel 400-Watt instrument amplifier/PA systems which they say represent a new and more powerful amplifier design for keyboardists, drummers, and anyone in need of a personal PA. They tell us that both feature class-leading wattage, a true bi-amped design, a custom-tuned electronic crossover, and an integrated four-channel mixer with built-in Alesis effects. They say that every component has been optimized for maximum efficiency, giving keyboardists a choice between two modern amplifiers that sound amazing, are lightweight, and are built to reliably perform at the highest level gig after gig.

Paul Gallo, Alto Professional Product Manager, told us, "We felt the keyboard amp was a neglected category. So we started from scratch, using the components and technology we think today's musicians expect. With the Kick12 and Kick15, people will hear the difference immediately."

Here's the full details in Alto's own words...

Unlike competing products that recycle the same outdated technology, the Kick12 and Kick15 each incorporate modern circuitry. Their true bi-amped designs provide 400 Watts of peak power. The Kick12 and Kick15 are both multifunctional amplifier systems, able to be used in a wide variety of applications. Both offer a four-channel mixer with stereo line inputs, effects, high and low EQ controls on all four channels, and an XLR input on Channel 1. Stereo RCA inputs for connecting MP3 players and other audio devices are also included.

The Kick12 and Kick15 each employ a custom-designed and tuned crossover that splits the incoming signal with razor-sharp precision--no highs to overwork the woofer, and no lows get lost in the tweeter. A kickstand on the back of the cabinet also allows the amp to be placed at an angle to allow for the best monitoring position when the user is seated at a keyboard or drum kit.
The Kick12 and Kick15 come packed with 16 essential Alesis DSP effects, including delay, flanger, chorus, and multiple reverbs. Each effect has 16 different variations, giving musicians a total of 256 effect presets to choose from. A footswitch input allows for instant activation or bypass of effects during performances (footswitch not included).

WNAMM13: Roland Introduces Stereo Mic For Field Recording

The CS-15RS is designed to match portable stereo recorders

Although field recorders use built-in mics for an all-in-one approach to recording, you sometimes need the flexibility and improved directional accuracy of a Cardioid microphone. For serious field recording, Roland says that the CS-15RS cardioid-type stereo microphone is a great match for their portable recorders such as the CD-2u, SD-2u, R-26, and R-05. It can be powered by an internal battery, or via the recorder's Plug In Power jack for mobile convenience. Bundled accessories include a desktop stand, windscreen, ¼-inch conversion cable, and a handheld grip that doubles as a mic stand mount.

A spokesperson told us, "Featuring a flat, wide frequency response for accurate, high-quality sound, the CS-15RS brings added flexibility when using your Roland recorder in remote applications. For recording sound effects and audio capture on video shoots, the cardioid pattern provides pinpoint audio pickup, with excellent rejection of off-axis sounds. To record large acoustic instrument ensembles, elevate and center the CS-15RS above the group to capture a wide stereo soundstage."

WNAMM 2013: Sonoma Wire Works Announces Android Low Latency Audio Solution

Latency down to approximately 20 milliseconds

Sonoma Wire Works have developed a low latency audio (LLA) solution for Android devices. Typical input to output latency on Android devices is between 100 and 250 milliseconds but Sonoma Wire Works tells us that their LLA solution brings latency down to approximately 20 milliseconds.

Doug Wright, president of Sonoma Wire Works, told Sonic State, "Musicians have been clamoring for a fix for high latency on Android. Sonoma Wire Works is proud to offer a solution that can broaden the device options for mobile music production."

Latency is the time it takes for sound to go into a system and back out. Low latency is essential to musicians if they want to use a device for real-time processing (e.g. guitar amp models and effects or input monitoring during recording). Latency above 25 ms is generally considered too high for input monitoring and live effects. Sonoma Wire Works says that their LLA solution achieves low latency on Android with analog input to output measurements comparable to what is currently available on iOS.

WNAMM13: AKG Updates The C1000 S

AKG releases mk4 version of their small diaphragm condenser mic

AKG has released its updated C1000 S multipurpose condenser microphone. They say that the high-performance small-diaphragm microphone is ideally suited for recording and live sound applications for drum overheads, pianos and acoustic instruments.

Thomas Umbauer, Product manager PPA, AKG, told Sonic State, "AKG's C1000 S is an efficient workhorse in the engineer's rig that provides high-quality sound the audio industry has expected from AKG over the past 65 years. We've put the C1000 S through rigorous testing in multiple scenarios and added more clever features such as the humidity proof gold capsule housing and gold plated XLR-pins. The microphone can take a beating on tour and still consistently provide perfect sound during any event."

WNAMM13: Cakewalk Releases Vintage Compressor Emulation In VST And AU Formats

CA-2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier is compatible with SONAR and other DAWs

Cakewalk has announced the CA-2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier, with support for VST, Audio Units, and SONAR X2 Producer's ProChannel. They tell us that this legendary vintage electro-optical tube compressor has been meticulously modeled and crafted by their expert developers to deliver the classic, highly desirable sound heard on countless platinum recordings.

"With the CA-2A, we are excited to bring this critically acclaimed DSP technology to a broader range of musicians," says Cakewalk Product Manager, Brian Desmond. "The response from the SONAR and Reason user base has been overwhelmingly positive, so it made perfect sense to make the CA-2A available to all VST or AU compatible DAWs."

Here's Cakewalk's press statement with all the details...

Since the 1960s, professional engineers have relied on the unique characteristics of this tube-based compressor to work its magic on an array of different types of tracks. Cakewalk developers modeled this unit and originally made it available as a ProChannel module in their flagship DAW, SONAR, and then in late 2012 released the RE-2A version as a Propellerhead Rack Extension. Now with the announcement of the CA-2A, musicians, producers, and engineers can use this highly regarded DSP technology in any VST or AU compatible DAW - at a fraction of the cost and with all the modern technological conveniences.

The CA-2A is suitable for just about any audio material, but it particularly excels on vocal tracks, producing transparent musical results, while preserving the dynamic performance. It also sounds great on electric and acoustic guitars including bass instruments, as well as piano, wind instruments and other tracks needing a smooth rich texture.

Cakewalk developers have put a great deal of effort into the research and development of the CA-2A, and the plugin gets its legendary sound from a variety of different factors. Depending on the incoming program material, the modeled T4 circuit uses an electroluminescent panel to determine the exact attack time (around 10 milliseconds,) and an optical photo cell to determine the release time; all while carefully modeling the amplifier's tubes and electro-optical device – just like the original hardware unit. The CA-2A also includes a Fast Resetting Photocell Memory feature that will allow the processor to respond with more agility than the original hardware unit when needed on material such as drums and slap bass.

In addition, the compressor serves as a "soft-knee" type slope with a fixed attack time of 10 milliseconds and a two-stage program-dependent release structure which results in warm analogue character. Unlike typical dynamics processors that have a fixed compression ratio across all frequencies, the CA-2A gain reduction varies at different frequencies. It also features an R37 control, true to the original hardware, where the compressors responsiveness to high frequencies can be adjusted. The R37 control has been a secret trick for many world-class engineers who use it as a natural de-esser- on vocals.

Cakewalk engineers have also implemented a side-chain function in the CA-2A, allowing the compressor to react to program material from one track, and apply it to another. This is an improvement that many mixing engineers will find useful for a wide variety of use cases, such as ducking or pumping of synth sounds in EDM.

Feature Highlights:

  • Meticulously modeled.
  • With only a few simple controls, it's easy to use and provides instant gratification.
  • Warm, smooth and natural sounding compression characteristics.
  • Frequency-dependent gain reduction.
  • Compressor and Limiter modes.
  • Up to 40 dB of smooth gain reduction.
  • Sidechain input for ducking, de-essing and pumping.
  • Gain reduction CV output to modulate other effects.
  • Zero latency for real-time tracking and mixing.
  • Fully modeled "R37" HF Pre-emphasis control.
  • VST, Audio Units & ProChannel compatible.

Pricing and Availability:
The CA-2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier will be available in late January for $99/£79/€99 and includes VST, AU, and ProChannel Module formats. Customers who previously purchased the PC2A (ProChannel Module) format can upgrade for $19.99/£15.99/€19.99 on the Cakewalk Store. F

WNAMM13: The State of Bitwig - Video

We have a chat with the developers

Winter NAMM 2013:

Bitwig have a booth! That in itself is a Big Thing. After their initial flurry of interest surrounding the announcement of their new hybrid DAW which promised so much, things have been a little quiet. This is something they want to remedy, so having a booth means they can show some builds actually working. In this case running on Windows 8, but there is parity between OSX and more importantly Linux.

We had a chat with about the roadmap and progress.

And we got a release date - sort of - its going to be this year, probably Summer.

WNAMM13: Keith McMillen QuNExus Video

We take a look at another kickstarter hit

Winter NAMM 2013:

Another nifty multi-facetted controller from KMI, this one has all the usual XY and pressure response, but also includes some cool CV and Gate functions. With one CV/Gate and two additional CV outputs the QuNexus can be used just as a MIDI/CV and CV/MIDI interface too. With CV input, you can turn the incoming input into MIDI data, manipulate it, then send it back out again for some awesome modular or analog action.

The price of $150 street, its hard to think of a reason NOT to have one, even if its just for the MIDI/CV features alone.

Interesting stuff.

WNAMM13: New Casio Privia PX5S Video

Synth powerhouse, piano and controller

Winter NAMM 2013 Anaheim:

You've no doubt seen the teaser photo and press release for Casio's new Privia PX5S.

You'd be understandably be forgiven for maybe passing it over in search of more obvious synth stuff, but its worth a look.

The power of the synth engine gives you 256 voices - with four HEX layer voices (6 layers, effects filter), you also get the Privia piano voices and 88 key Tri-sensor, Scaled Hammer Action II. There's also the MIDI controller aspect, with four zones, which can also work over the MIDI ports OR the USB port separately, means you can control some iPad or laptop based voices in addition to the 256 you have on board.

A few other nice touches complete the package, and from what I heard in the flesh the sound is pretty impressive.

Available soon $999 street.

WNAMM13: JBL Announces Flagship Large-Format Studio Monitor

M2 Master Reference Monitor integrates 'super drivers' and patented technologies

Responding to the call for greater accuracy and dynamic range in music and post-production control rooms,JBL Professional is introducing the M2 Master Reference Monitor that they say for the first time makes world-class, large-format monitoring feasible in a wide range of rooms. The largest speaker in their studio monitor line, JBL tells us the M2 integrates new JBL transducer technologies and patented innovations in a free-standing, 2-way system that can be placed in any production environment and tuned to provide a superior level of accuracy and performance. Here's the details in JBL's own words...

The M2 Master Reference Monitor design leverages JBL's newly designed D2 Compression Driver which uses two annular diaphragms and two voice coils to deliver extended high frequency response and very low distortion at very high sound pressure levels. The D2 is mated with JBL's new 2216ND Differential Drive® 15-inch woofer also with dual voice coils, incorporating patented wire that reduces power compression enabling linear output regardless of playback level. With these two extraordinary drivers as the engine, the M2 Master Reference Monitor delivers extended in-room response of 20 Hz to 40 kHz for today's high-resolution recording formats, and remarkable 123 dB SPL at one metre, providing the necessary dynamic range for demanding music and film production.

To allow an imperceptible transition between the two drivers, and deliver exceptional imaging, JBL engineers pioneered a new patent-pending waveguide dubbed "Image Control" that enables neutral frequency response, not just on-axis, but off-axis in the vertical and horizontal planes all the way down to the M2's 800 Hz crossover point. The unique geometry of the waveguide allows the M2 to deliver remarkable high-frequency detail and imaging and natural timbre at any listening position, in a broad range of acoustic environments.

HARMAN's Crown I-Tech HD power amplifiers complete the system, providing greater than a kilowatt of clean power to the 2216ND woofer, and more than enough power for the D2 driver. In conjunction with the M2's revolutionary waveguide, digital signal processing in the Crown I-Tech or BSS Soundweb™ London processor allows the implementation of an ideal crossover, while providing the option for storage of eq presets.

In conjunction with measurement software, HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ software allows central control of system calibration and tuning to address non-linearity in the room, ensuring a high degree of accuracy particularly in the room-dependent low-frequency area, whether the M2 is free-standing, soffit-mounted or placed adjacent to a wall.

With an efficient form-factor of only 14 inches deep, 20 inches wide and 48 inches tall, the M2 Master Reference Monitor allows flexibility of placement in artist studios, behind the screen, and even LCR configurations in remote trucks.

"Leveraging the best of our JBL technologies, we set out to solve the problems that have prevented the use of large monitors in all but purpose built control rooms," commented Peter Chaikin, JBL Professional Senior Manager of Recording And Broadcast Marketing "We feel the M2 Master Reference Monitor will be a game changer, which for the first time, makes a big, detailed world-class monitoring experience a viable option for artist studios, mastering facilities, small mix stages and screening rooms."

Pricing and Availability:
The M2 Master Reference Monitor will be available spring of 2013 in stereo and surround sound configurations from select JBL Professional dealers.

They say that the IN2 is the solution that project studio, home recordists and broadcast production personnel have been waiting for: a single desktop-unit interface with two analog inputs and outputs, two SPDIF digital inputs and outputs, two high-quality Class A microphone pre-amps, volume, mono/stereo dim controls, Aphex's renowned optical compression and the acclaimed HeadPod 4 technology.
Aphex CEO David Wiener told Sonic State, "With the continued increase in desktop-based recording, we felt it was important to apply Aphex's engineering efforts and acclaimed technologies to a new line of USB recording tools. The IN2 Interface will surely find a home as a key part of recording setups far and wide, and we can't wait to hear what users cook up with it!"

An Aphex spokesperson told us, "Other desktop computer audio interfaces are merely basic input/output devices that still require the discriminating user to incorporate external preamps, compressors and headphone amplifiers. The IN2 brings it all – high-quality mic pre's, transparent optical compression, and Aphex's unique HeadPod 4 headphone amplification system. By allowing compression to take place in the analog domain, before going through the A-to-D conversion process, before going through the USB-to-DAW transfer, the best possible recordings can be achieved. Because of the extensive feature set, purchasers of the IN2 are saving potentially thousands of dollars worth of outboard processing and connectivity equipment. With the Aphex IN2, you get it all."
