Rattly And Raw: Kontakt sample instruments

Dirty, cheap, cranky, crusty little gems to fill those cracks in your productions. These instruments are designed to be 'that little extra thing' that so many tracks end up needing.

In the real world, most of these instruments have maybe only a few playable notes or at best a limited range!
Rattly And Raw have greatly expanded the playability and range of these original instruments by using state of the art time stretching software and meticulously hand tuning each mechanism.

The emphasis here is on imperfection and character. These instruments are not posh, and not slick, but they might inspire new directions or augment what you already have in surprising ways. The unique sound of these samples comes from the instruments themselves, not from additional processing! That being said... on most instruments we've included a LoFi button and a processing knob or two that will let you dirt 'em up a little more...

The instruments in these packs were all sampled with combinations of Royer R122s, Neumann KM84i, Elux M49, C-Ducers, Reslo RBTs and all run into NEVE 33135s with carnhill xformers, some vintage APIs, Focusrite ISA 215 or a BUZZ ARC depending on what the instruments demanded. The Cold War Listening Station samples were recorded with a handheld audio recorder and worked on extensively in post-production due to the super-unfriendly recording conditions!

Most instruments are sampled with very little processing, and they are all at concert pitch (A440) but that's where the correctness ends, these are dirty little beasts and...well...rattly and raw... You'll find they are easy to slot in wherever you need!

We've recorded and programmed multiple round robins and velocity layers with most instruments to capture the character and feel of the instruments as closely as possible and tried to keep playability at the forefront at all times! If there are not multiple velocity layers or round robins, it's generally because we preferred the simpler sound this resulted in!

Most instruments (where appropriate) also have a keyswitch activated release note option which will play a different round robin note on the note off action of a keypress. This lets you play very realistic trills and adds a great deal more expressive potential to each instrument.

We have simple custom Kontakt scripts in many of our instruments. These range from simple LoFi processing scripts to a full velocity and volume management system. These have been written by the Rattly And Raw team and the fantastic Mathew Lane except the marxophone script which was written by the excellent Iain Morland.

Instruments with a long natural sustain (such as the zither-types) also have an additional instrument that maps the sustain to sustain pedal. Very handy for approaching these instruments in a completely different way!

Most of the instruments have quite a small range (usually around 2 octaves). This is always more than the physical instrument itself has, but any potential limitation you might perceive is compensated for by our ridiculously cheap pricing!!

These are all fantastically playable instruments and we hope you'll get endless use out of them!
